Four men, if convicted, could face a triple-tax penalty of over $3M
Brandon police along with the Manitoba Finance Special Investigations Unit seized a massive load of illegal cigarettes, one of the biggest seizures of illegal smokes brought into the province.
Back on September 9th, Brandon police officers stopped a vehicle coming from an Ontario first nations community and found 173 cases of unmarked contraband cigarettes But that wasn't all, as the following day a search of a storage unit in Brandon turned up 183 cases.
In total, over 3.5 million cigarettes were seized along with cash, and had they been sold, the Manitoba government stood to lose $1,071,120 in tax revenue.
Four men from Brandon, aged 46 to 60, were arrested, and if convicted, could face a triple-tax penalty of over $3-million dollars.
