Brandon drops 4-3 decision

The Brandon Wheat Kings dropped a 4-3 overtime decision to the Calgary Hitmen on Friday night, in front of 3,002 fans at Westoba Place.

It was another poor start for the Wheat Kings who fell behind 2-0 in the first period on goals from Orca Wiesblatt and Blake Allan.

"We were not prepared to start the game," said Head Coach Dave Lowry. "Calgary took it to us in the first period. They played the game in straight lines and made us work."

Brandon would rally in the middle stanza, scoring three unanswered to regain the lead. Connor Gutenberg, Marcus Sekundiak and Cole Reinhardt all found the back of the net in the 2nd period, putting Brandon in the lead heading to the third.

"We're certainly not quitting on games," added Lowry. "Regardless of what the score is we have the ability to push back and get even. In the 2nd period, we did a lot of good things. I don't like playing from behind, it's tough to win in this league and behind early all comes down to preparation."

The Hitmen would tie it up just 0:51 seconds into the third period as Weisblatt potted his second of the night.

Neither team could pull ahead in the third, and the game went to overtime.

In the extra frame, it was Carson Focht who would put the game away, beating Ethan Kruger on a snapshot from the slot. Despite the loss, Kruger made 30 saves on the night.

The Wheat Kings will quickly hit the reset button on Saturday night as the Regina Pats come to town, looking to build off a 6-0 win in Swift Current on Friday.

"I think in the last couple weeks we have started to play our style of game more often and we're working on being more consistent," said forward Marcus Sekundiak. "When we do things right, we win games, simple as that."

Game time on Saturday night is 7:30. The QCountry pre-game show begins at 7:00.
