6-5 win Saturday night

The Winnipeg ICE returned home after a three-week road swing and got revenge on their provincial rivals on Saturday night, winning 6-5 in another high scoring affair.

Connor McClennon recorded the hat-trick and Michel Teply added a goal and two assists for the ICE who fired 51 shots on goal on the night.

“We had a tough start to the game,” said Assistant Coach Don MacGillivray. “We took some penalties and they capitalized early on the man advantage. We made some mistakes and had some missed assignments tonight. We spent too much time in the penalty box and it was a frustrating night.”

The Wheat Kings battled back from down on three separate occasions on the night, but giving up two powerplay goals and a short-handed marker was the difference in this one.

Luka Burzan had two goals for Brandon while Cole Reinhardt continued his hot streak scoring once and adding two assists. Ridly Greig scored on a first-period penalty shot and Lynden McCallum added the other.

“I think we got going in the second period, but at the end of the day we made mistakes that came back to hurt us,” added MacGillivray. “They are a dangerous team and have some guys that can put the puck in the net. We showed some battle but we were on our heels a lot tonight and it came back to hurt us.”

Ethan Kruger made 46 saves in the losing effort, while Jesse Makaj stopped 23 for the win.

Brandon’s loss moves them to 12-15-1-0 on the season, four points back of the ICE for third place in the East Division.

The Wheat Kings open up the month of December with four straight home games, starting Tuesday night vs Swift Current. (7:00 puck drop)
