In the first of four meetings on the season, the Brandon Wheat Kings knocked off the Red Deer Rebels 5-2 at Westoba Place on Tuesday night.
Ben McCartney scored twice for Brandon, extending his point streak to four games (4G-2A), while Ethan Kruger turned aside 23 shots for the win in his 11th consecutive start.
"We worked hard tonight... and we did some really good things," said Assistant Coach Don MacGillivray. "We turned up the pace of the game in the 2nd period and played a lot in the offensive zone. When you do that, you make the other team go 200 feet to score goals and that makes it tough on them."
After a slow-moving first period, the Wheat Kings broke the game open in the middle frame, scoring three unanswered goals.
Luka Burzan and Nolan Ritchie bookended McCartney's second of the night in a period that Brandon outshot Red Deer 17-7.
"We got pucks behind their defense tonight and were able to establish a forecheck early on and we were winning the little 50/50 puck battles," added MacGillivray. "We needed a response tonight. There are so many little things throughout the game that don't show up on the scoreboard. We need to do those on a regular basis and tonight we did."
Duncan Pierce put the game away early in the third period, scoring his first goal as a Wheat King on a penalty shot.
Brandon improves their record to 8-10-0-0 with the win and opens the month of November taking two of three on this current three-game homestand.
Now, the Wheat Kings head to Saskatchewan for a mini two-game road trip starting at the Art Hauser Centre in Prince Albert on Friday night.
"We need to see our group come ready to play a good team on Friday in Prince Albert. That is a tough building to play in no matter how good the Raiders are. They are the defending champions for a reason and we need to be sharp."
Game time in P.A is 7:00. The QCountry pre-game show begins at 6:30.
