The Brandon Wheat Kings extended their season high winning streak to six games on Sunday night, with a 3-1 win over the Saskatoon Blades.
The win pulls Brandon into a tie with the Blades for top spot in the East Division with 19 points and hands the Blades their second straight loss.
It was not the start the Wheat Kings were looking for, being outshot 12-8 in the opening frame. A sluggish start lead to some penalty troubles and the Blades capitalized off the stick of Caiden Daley.
"Sasaktoon is a very good hockey club and they come at you hard," said Head Coach Don MacGillivray. "We did a nice job after the first period, getting back to doing the things we wanted to do. Those are great games to play in, they feel like playoff games."
Lynden McCallum would tie the game in the second period before Ben McCartney potted the eventual game winner early in the third period to provide some breathing room.
Reid Perepeluk would put the game on ice with an empty net goal with just a handful of seconds left on the clock.
Ethan Kruger picked up win number seven, making 22 saves while Koen MacInnes made 28 saves in the losing effort.
Brandon won't have much time to celebrate the victory though, as they take on the Prince Albert Raiders on Monday night.
"We have to be ready right when the puck drops," said McCartney. "They are a good hockey club over there. I know they are missing some pieces but they will be ready to go. They will be looking for some revenge."
