Brandon police managed to peacefully end an incident, at around 3:50 Wednesday morning, that could have ended in tragedy.
Officers arrested a 53-year-old man who allegedly assaulted his girlfriend, and then threatened to set their home on fire.
When police arrived, they say the man had a gas can in one hand, and a candle in the other. Paper towels had also been lit on fire on the stove.
A taser and brass knuckles were also seized in the home.
Police say the victim did not need medical attention, and the suspect now faces several charges.

An 18-year-old Brandon woman was arrested on theft charges on Tuesday afternoon. (July 14)
Brandon police say they got a call that a worker at a business on 10th Street chased down and was holding an alleged shoplifter.
The suspect has a court date in September.

Brandon police are also investigating a couple of break and enters.
On Tuesday morning, a resident in the 300 Block 17th Street reported that someone tried to break into the detached garage within the past 24 hours.
Police attended and observed damage to the walk-in door that was caused during the unsuccessful attempt to break in.
And on Tuesday evening, a resident from the 300 Block 16th Street reported a Break and Enter to their garage that occurred sometime between July 12th and July 14th.
Officers attended and learned that entry was gained by breaking a side window.
Approximately $4,000 in power tools and lawn equipment was stolen.
