Louis Montroy had a lot of thoughts flying through his head when he checked his LOTTO 6/49 ticket for the November 24 draw; the most prominent of which: how much did I actually win?!
The Brandon man got his answer after doing a triple-take at the self-scanner screen: $5 million dollars!
“I scanned the ticket and thought, ‘$50,000?!’” he recalled when claiming his prize. “But there were too many zeroes. So I thought, ‘Nah, that’s $500,000!’” “All of a sudden it clicked in that it was actually five-million-dollars,” he continued, laughing. “Well, oh my God! Was I ever surprised!”
The winner said he went home with his ticket and checked the numbers on the WCLC website a few more times with his wife.
“When I was at the store I tried to stay as quiet as possible,” he said. “But when I was at home, I just wanted to scream out in celebration.” “I checked the numbers again and again, and almost fell out of my chair every time,” he laughed. “I kept saying, ‘Man, oh man! I can’t believe this!’”
Montroy said he hasn’t given too much thought to what he will do with his windfall, but knows one thing for sure – he’s going to share with his family.
“I’m going to make sure my kids are taken care of,” he said. “I want to help them out with whatever they need. After that, I have no idea what I’m going to do!”
The happy winner purchased his winning ticket from the Canadian Tire Gas Bar located at 1655 18th Street in Brandon. He won his jackpot prize by matching all six of the main draw numbers on the November 24 draw – 10, 11, 18, 20, 35, 48.
Montroy joins a few other big winners this year, some of whom took home record-setting jackpots. Earlier this year, a Winnipeg family shared a $60 million LOTTO MAX prize, the largest win in Manitoba history. More recently, Manitoba paid out a $27,505,455.30 LOTTO 6/49 prize to a winner from Fraserwood, MB; and a $20 million LOTTO MAX prize to a Wasagamack local.
