There’s huge interest in a Brandon School Board (BSD) meeting tonight, and it’ll be held in a larger space to accommodate those wanting to attend at Vincent Massey High School’s gym.
Over thirty delegates are scheduled to voice their opinions on a proposal, made at the last BSD meeting, to form a committee to review school library books with gender identity and sexual health themes. There are concerns from local LGBTQ and sex education groups that such a committee could potentially ban books with LGBTQ-plus content from schools. Groups from Brandon University and the Canadian Centre for Child Protection have also come out against such a committee beiung formed.
If you cannot attend, the meeting, it’ll be livestreamed on the Brandon school division’s website at 7:00 pm.
Maxime Bernier, leader of the People’s Party of Canada, also plans to attend the meeting. He has reportedly said he wants to stand with parents in the wake of a push to teach ‘sex to young kids.’ He also believes the idea of transgenderism is ‘toxic to our society’. Bernier is currently running for a seat in the federal riding of Portage-Lisgar.
Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson has come out against book bans, but said her government won’t interfere in the affairs of local school boards who might be considering such a proposal.
