The Brandon University women’s volleyball team picked up a massive win Friday night in Vancouver, knocking off the UBC Thunderbirds in a battle of the top two teams in the nation.
Vaovai Aiono had eight kills and three aces for the second-ranked Lady ‘Cats who defeated the top-ranked T-Birds in four sets.
Set scores were 20-25, 25-21, 25-23 and 26-24.
It’s the first time BU has beat UBC in their nine-year history and coach Lee Carter hopes it’s a launching pad towards even bigger goals.
"This is the first time we’ve beat them in league. For us to go to 12-3, we’re making history and to beat them at home, it’s the first time, so it’s a pretty big win, but we’ve got a lot more bigger wins hopefully coming later on in February. Now it allows us to believe that we’ve got a shot at a medal and that’s what our goal has been all along," Carter told CKLQ’s Tyler Crayston.
Alexis Loewen had eight kills and was involved in 10 blocks while Meaghan Robertson recorded seven kills and seven blocks for BU.
Donata Huebert had 18 digs while Kellie Baker had 22 assists for Brandon who upped their record to 12-3 and are four points behind UBC for first-place in the conference.
On the men’s side, the Bobcats suffered their third straight loss by dropping a four-set decision against the T-Birds.
Set scores were 21-25, 25-15, 25-18 and 25-22.
Sebastien Steigmeier had 15 kills while Sam Tuivai added 12 kills for Brandon who saw their record slip to 7-8.
The defending conference champions are part of a three-way tie for sixth-place in the standings with the top seven making the playoffs.
