Via Rail, who employs more than 3,100 workers, will be temporarily laying off 1,000 unionized employees due to COVID-19’s impact on the travel industry.
In a release, Via Chief Executive Cynthia Garneau, says she doesn’t think ridership will return to pre-COVID levels anytime soon. The Montreal-based company expects the layoffs to begin effective July 24.
This year has not been to kind to Via who had to layoff close to a thousand people back in March during the rail blockades.
