Like millions of people across the globe, I’ve had to discover a few new hobbies due to the self-isolation brought on by the Coronavirus pandemic. Luckily, I had one that I had been working on previously: teaching myself how to play the harmonica.
I’ve thought that the harmonica would be a pretty sweet instrument to play for a while. I mean, some of my favourite musicians incorporate it into their music…Hugh Dillon from Headstones and Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin, to name a couple. Something about that sound, that can be so sorrowful-yet-powerful really drew me in. As luck would have it. my Great Aunt gifted me a pair of harmonicas that once belonged to her husband, my Great Uncle. It was here that my musical journey began.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m far from being a virtuoso…but I’m getting the hang of it. I can successfully pull of a rousing rendition of ‘Turkey in the Straw’, and passibly play along with some Neil Young or Kris Kristofferson, but I’ve got a long way to go…and I’m excited to take the trip. Have YOU ever decided to randomly pick up and instrument? Let me know! Amateur musicians, unite!
