It’s been a productive year for Newdale product John Lawrence with the Saskatchewan Huskies.
The freshman season for the former Neepawa Native will continue this week as Lawrence and the Huskies are hosting the University Cup.
Lawrence has some championship pedigree, having won the SJHL title with the Humboldt Broncos in 2012 and being runner-up in 2013.
"It definitely helps you prepare for the big games," Lawrence told CKLQ’s Bruce Luebke.
Lawrence had seven goals and 12 points in his rookie year, along with one assist in three playoff games.
"I felt pretty good; I didn’t expect to play as much as I did. Just as confidence grew, I got more and more time and then I was lucky to get in every game," said Lawrence.
Saskatchewan lost in the opening round of the playoffs and play their first game of the tournament on Friday.
"It’s a pretty fast tournament so we have no time to get used to it. We’ll have to bring our ‘A’ game right from the start because if you lose the first game you’re done," added Lawrence.
The Huskies are the sixth and last seed for the CIS men’s hockey championship while the Canada West champion Alberta Golden Bears are #1.
