Brandon product Amanda Thornborough is headed to Paris in August.
Thornborough has officially named to Rugby Canada’s women’s fifteens 26-player roster Monday for the IRB Women’s Rugby World Cup in France.
A former CIS MVP, Thornborough played with the fifteens team on a three-game New Zealand Tour earlier this month, a strong indication that she would be named to the final roster, and also helped Canada sweep the United States at the Can-Am Cup earlier this spring.
Thornborough helped St. Francis Xavier to two CIS titles in her four years and, after graduating from school in 2012, joined the National team program.
She has been a member of the National Senior Women’s Sevens team, helping them to an undefeated win at the Hong Kong Sevens Tournament in 2013, and also saw her first fifteens action at the 2013 Nations Cup.
The Women’s Rugby World Cup begins on August 1st, with Canada in Pool A with Spain, England and Samoa.
Canada has appeared in all six Rugby World Cups dating back to the inaugural event in 1991.
Our country’s best finish was a fourth-place showing in 1998, 2002 and 2006.
Canada finished sixth at the last Rugby World Cup in 2010.
