The Brandon Curling Club is celebrating its 125th anniversary this season, and the Holy Grail of Canadian men’s curling is coming to town as part of the big party.
Nolan Thiessen will bring the Brier Tankard to the Wheat City as part of a junior clinic he’s hosting in his hometown on Saturday, October 25th.
"It’s not like someone bringing home the Stanley Cup, but it’s a pretty cool deal. I talked to the CCA and they said yeah for sure they’d be able to get that to me. I was pretty happy once everything came together," Thiessen told CKLQ’s Tyler Crayston. "We’re still tossing around a few ideas on what the day is going to look like, but I’m pretty excited to show off the Tankard and maybe help out a few junior curling kids."
Thiessen cut his curling teeth in Brandon in the 1990’s, and won the Manitoba junior men’s championship with Mike McEwen in 2001, which included a silver medal showing at nationals that year.
"I haven’t lived in Brandon for over ten years now, but that’s home and that’s where I learned how to curl really. By the time I left Brandon I won the juniors and kind of had this goal and this dream, which I’ve kind of been able to see happen, so it’s pretty exciting to be able to come back and relive some of those memories," said Thiessen.
The 33-year-old captured two Brier titles and a world championship with Kevin Koe, and will be teaming up with John Morris for the upcoming season.
