– The upcoming Subway Super Series will feature Brandon Wheat Kings on both sides of the ice. Ivan Provorov will play for the Russian Selects against Team WHL on November 10th in Saskatoon and November 11th in Brandon. Provorov played with the Russians at world under-18’s this past spring and also took part in the World Junior Summer Development Camp in August. – The Wheat Kings will get to play against an old teammate when they visit Victoria. Jack Palmer played 77 games over three seasons with Brandon before the Wheat Kings’ dealt him to his hometown team in November of 2013. Palmer had two goals and four points in 15 games this season for a Royals’ team that has won four in a row and seven of their last nine games after a 1-4-1-0 start to the season.
– Former Brandon co-captain Matt Calvert has been bitten by the injury bug. He’s been placed on the IR by the Columbus Blue jackets and is expected to miss a week of playing time with an upper body injury. Calvert has collected a goal and an assist in seven games this season after posting career highs in assists, points and games played in 2013-2014.
– Winnipeg Jets’ forward Evander Kane is back at practice wearing a non-contact jersey and will join the club for their upcoming four-game road trip. Kane was injured in the season opener when he collided with teammate Mark Scheifele and hasn’t played since. The Jets have a record of 3-5 and are last place in the Central Division. Winnipeg opens their trek against the New York Islanders on Tuesday night.
– The Edmonton Oilers continue to turn their season around. Ben Scrivens got the shutout with 29 saves as the Oilers blanked the Montreal Canadiens 3-0. Benoit Pouliot had a goal and an assist for Edmonton, who have won four in a row to erase a 0-4-1 start to the season, their worst in franchise history.
– Westman was well represented as weekly player of the week awards were handed out. Drake Lindsay of the Neepawa Natives is the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s player of the week, while Bradley Schoonbaert was named the top player in the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League.
– A soldier from CFB Shilo is hitting the international links. Bombardier Jared Gossen is bound for Bahrain in the Persian Gulf to play with Canada at the world military golf championship that begins November 13th. CKLQ’s Tyler Crayston has more here.
– Olympic gold medalist Jennifer Jones won the inaugural Canad Inns Women’s Classic in Portage. Jones got a deuce in sixth and stole five more points over the next two ends to beat Jill Thurston 9-4 in Monday night’s all-Manitoba final. Jones finished the WCT event with a perfect 6-0 record.
– Minnedosa’s Charity Marchischuk and her St. Francis Xavier X-Women are seeded #4 going into the CIS Women’s Rugby Championship this week. StFX won their conference title in overtime and go into the nationals with an undefeated record. Marchischuk and the X-Women are looking for the program’s first national since title since Brandon’s Amanda Thornborough led squad to the top prize in 2012. The CIS championship starts Thursday.
– The Vincent Massey Vikings junior varsity team saw their season to come to an end in the Winnipeg High School Football League. The Vikings fell 54-0 in Monday’s quarter-final game against the Oak Park Raiders.
– Kai Forbath kicked a 40-yard field goal in overtime as the Washington Redskins snapped the Dallas Cowboys’ six-game winning streak with a 20-17 victory in the NFL Monday nighter.
