Kelly Marnoch and his crew from Carberry continued their Cinderella run by clinching a spot in the ‘Elite Eight’ on Friday morning at the Safeway Championship in Brandon.
Marnoch scored three in the third and three more in the eighth to post a 10-7 victory over Scott Ramsay in an A-Side qualifier for his third straight win.
"We’re more confident on this ice surface now then we have been in the past and that makes all the difference. If you know where to put the broom and you’re confident that it’s going to do what you think it’s going to do, that makes the world of difference," said Marnoch.
Marnoch is joined in the playoff round by top-seed Mike McEwen, 11-time Manitoba champion Jeff Stoughton and Canadian junior champion Braden Calvert of Carberry.
McEwen earned a quick 8-1 five-end victory over Jared Kolomaya, Stoughton doubled Daley Peters 8-4 and Calvert got past Richard Muntain 9-6 to advance to Friday night’s 7:45 p.m. draw.
"Yeah, it was a bit of a light skate, but that’s okay. The competition is mostly backend weighted, so start it up and play pretty much most every draw from then on. Looking forward to the playoffs tonight," said McEwen.
