The second annual Mayor’s International Cup is taking place during the Manitoba Summer Fair in Brandon this week.
The soccer tournament takes place over the next five days, with the opening games at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Eight teams are involved in this year’s tournament, representing the countries of Canada, the Ukraine, El Salvador, Ireland, Honduras, Brazil, Germany and Columbia.
"Soccer is a huge international sport and it just brings together people from all nationalities," said Provincial Ex spokesperson Jennifer Skiehar, "Even on the different teams, we have different ethnicities represented."
Rules of the tournament state that at least one player (or coach) has to be originally from the country they’re representing.
All the action takes place inside at Westman Communications Group Place.
"It’s very, very similar to an outdoor game however, there’s no throw-ins, there’s no corner kicks and that sort of thing," added Skiehar, "There’s a little bit of a difference but the action is very intense because it’s a smaller field and control of the ball has to be lot. The footwork is very, very high."
The teams will play a round-robin in two four-team pools on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with quarter-finals slated for Saturday and the semifinals, bronze medal game and gold game taking place on Sunday.
