– Match play began Tuesday at the 82nd Annual Tamarack Golf Tournament at the Clear Lake Golf Course. Six divisions finished their qualifying Monday, with Kaitlin Troop taking women’s medalist honours, Bill Crossman having the low score in Champions qualifying, Fred Riddle is the Senior Men’s medalists, Keaton Jameson is the Junior Men’s, Bobbi Uhl is the Junior Women’s and the duo of Netti LePage and Michelle Draper are the first medalists in the new Women’s Scramble division. – The Morden Mohawks are Border West Baseball League champions for the third consecutive year. The Mohawks overcame a 5-0 deficit by scoring eight runs in the fifth inning and went on to a 10-7 win over the Baldur Regals Monday night in the fifth and deciding game of their league final. The season isn’t over for Baldur. The Regals will host the Western Canadian championship beginning on Thursday.
– The Minnedosa Mavericks are one win away from a tenth straight Santa Clara Baseball League title. Andrew Richards homered and drove in three runs to lead Minnedosa to a 12-4 win over Plumas Monday night, giving the Mavs a two games to none lead in the League Final. Minnedosa looks to take the title when they host Game 3 Wednesday night.
– The Brandon Cloverleafs will open the Baseball Canada Senior Men’s Championship Thursday with just seven MSBL players. The Cloverleafs’ headed East to Chatham, New Brunswick with a roster that consists of just five of their own players and two members of the league champion Oak River Dodgers in Matt Gunning and Duncan Paddock. – The Yankees are a game ahead of idle Toronto for first place in the American League East after edging the Minnesota Twins 8-7 in 10 innings Monday. Chase Hedley hit a bases-loaded grounder in the bottom of the 10th that was bobbled by Minnesota’s infield. New York starter Bryan Mitchell sustained a small nasal fracture after being hit in the face by a line drive.
– Major League Baseball has announced the schedule for post-season play and once again the World Series will be contested in November. The Fall Classic will start on Tuesday, October 27 in the American League city with the seventh game, if needed, on Wednesday, November 4. The playoffs will begin Thursday, October 8.
– The president of the Calgary Flames is expected to unveil plans today for a new arena. Talk of a replacement for the aging Saddledome has been circulating for years, and Ken King is scheduled to give an update on what is called the CalgaryNEXT project. It is widely expected to include an arena, a football stadium for the Calgary Stampeders and an amateur sports fieldhouse.
