Calgary, AB (CKLQ) – It was a good day to be a Thompson on Sunday. Logan Thompson made 37 saves and Baron scored twice on route to a 5-3 victory over the Calgary Hitmen.
The win was Brandon’s 3rd in a row and earns them a clean sweep of their three game road trip through Central Alberta.
For the third straight game, Brandon scored first. Gunnar Wegleitner scored his 3rd goal in as many nights to open the scoring. Kade Jensen and Ty Lewis would add first period goals opening up a 3-0 lead at the first intermission.
Baron Thompson gave Brandon a 4-0 lead early in the 2nd period and the insurance marker would be much needed as the Hitmen quickly pushed back. Calgary outshot Brandon 20-5 in the 2nd, on the heels of three straight Wheat Kings penalties.
The Hitmen cut into the lead early in the third but Baron Thompson replied just over a minute later to restore the four goal lead.
With Brandon slowly running out of gas, the parade to the penalty box began. Matteo Gennaro would score two powerplay goals in the final 2:00 of the third period but it wasn’t enough as the Wheat Kings hung on for the victory.
The win moves Brandon to a 4-2-0-1 record on the season and gives them one third of the road wins they had all of last season (Just 9 road wins in 16/17).
The Wheat Kings won’t have too much time to celebrate as they welcome the Edmonton Oil Kings to Westman Place on Wednesday before a two game home stand vs Prince Albert on the weekend.
