Brandon, MB (CKLQ) – In a battle of heavyweights in the Canada West, the Brandon Bobcats came out on top in a decisive three-set victory over the Trinity Western Spartans in men’s volleyball play.
The #2 team in the country took down the #1 team 25-20, 27-25 and 25-23 at the Healthy Living Centre.
All three sets followed a similar script of both teams going back and forth, until a late Bobcats run pushed them over the edge to victory.
Elliot Viles led the way for the Bobcats with 12 kills, 1 ace and 2 blocks.
For the Spartans, Steinbach’s Eric Loeppky had 12 kills.
The two teams play once again on Saturday at the Healthy Living Centre at 6:45 p.m.
Meanwhile earlier in the evening, the Brandon Bobcats women’s volleyball team nearly took down the undefeated Trinity Western team, losing in five sets.
The scores were 21-25, 25-18, 25-12. 20-25 and 15-9.
The Bobcats started strong with a convincing first set victory, but let it slip away in the next two sets.
It was the fourth set that caught the Spartans by surprise though, with the Bobcats going on a 12-2 run to win it.
But the #1 Spartans went back to their winning ways in a convincing fifth set win.
Michelle Egger had a great game with 18 kills and 2 blocks.
The two teams play at the HLC at 5:00 p.m.
