June is Pride Month, and although Brandon Pride canceled the Brandon Pride dates, originally slated for June 8-14th, back on April 16th becuase of health risks of Covid-19. But people are still recognizing the month online. Many in Westman took to social media over the weekend to post pics of past pride parades, and to share pictures of parades in cities where lockdowns were not as stringent as Manitoba. Nickelodeon is taking part in the celebrations, and made news over the weekend when the netowrk appeared all while appearing to confirm that SpongeBob is a member of the LGBTQ+ community. In a tweet on Saturday, the television network wrote, “Celebrating #Pride with the LGBTQ+ community and their allies this month and every month” it wrote, and showed photos of SpongeBob, “Avatar” character Korra, who identifies as Queer, and actor Michael D. Cohen, who is Transgender. In the past, SpongeBob creator Stephen Hillenburg has said that the characters on his show are asexual and asexual people are part of the LGBTQ+ community, which could explain the tweet, too. The network has not confirmed whether or not SpongeBob identifies as gay or not, but fans are still pumped that he appears to be identifying as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. Winnipeg Pride events will be digital this year and will go September 4-13th. More details in the links.
