The year was 2004. Yours truly was a bright-eyed college student, and with my roommate, we were trying to solve an age-old question: What’s the quickest way to chill down a beer? We tried running it under freezing cold tap water for minutes at a time…no good. We tried that thing where you get a paper towl wet, wrap it around the beer bottle, and put it in the freezer for a few minutes. No good.
Turns out, we were going about it entirely the wrong way. It took a team of EIGHT researchers to figure out the most effective method: about 1kg of ice in a bucket of water, with 100g of salt mixed in. This combo can cool down your beer by almost 19 degrees in less than half an hour. I’d call that a win!
I still don’t know how I can become one of those “beer researchers”, however. If anyone has any idea, please forward the information to me. 😉
