Notices have gone out to Brandon homeowners along the Assiniboine River who might be at risk of flooding. Business owners are to receive their notices sometime today (July 2).
Wednesday’s notice reads: “You are receiving this notice because your residence or business is at an elevated risk of flooding should there be an issue with the level of the river.
Due to the recent heavy rains there is concern about flash flooding in the Assiniboine River Valley especially related to the Little Saskatchewan River.
The City of Brandon is taking necessary measures to protect the city and its residents, however, with an abundance of caution, we are requesting that you be ready to evacuate on short notice.
Plan to stay with a friend or relative if at all possible. If not alternate arrangements will be made through the City of Brandon. Call the Enquiry Centre (204-729-2186).
In the event of an evacuation order, you will be notified as follows: – The City of Brandon’s emergency siren – Local radio stations – The City of Brandon website (www.brandon.ca) – Facebook and Twitter – In-person door-to-door visitations.

While every measure is being taken to ensure that you will not be required to evacuate, the City of Brandon would like to provide you with a list of preparation steps should evacuating your home/business be necessary.
Prior to receiving a notification to evacuate, please have yourself, your family members and/or residents of your home pack one suitcase or duffel bag with the following items (if applicable):
– Photo ID and one document containing your mailing address
– Medication for all family members
– Manitoba Health ID (MHSC) card
– Wallet & bank card
– Cell phone and charger
– Eye glasses, contacts and contact solution
– Change of clothes
– Infant and child care supplies (i.e. diapers, wipes, formula)
– Dentures
In addition, please bring the following items with you (if applicable):
– Mobility aids (i.e. wheelchair, walker, cane, hearing aids)
– Prosthetics
Pet owners: Please take your pets with you or make plans for the care of your pet. Upon receiving a notice of evacuation ensure you have the following pet-related items:
– Pet food/treats
– Collar with identification
– Pet toy or comfort item (i.e. blanket)
– Pet kennel
– Proof of vaccinations: Dogs: Rabies, distemper and parvo (bordetella is highly recommended) Cats: FVR shot
Before leaving your home:
– Consider moving any valuable items to the top floor of your home
Upon leaving your home:
– Gather the residents of your home, the items you’re bringing with you and this hand-out
– Plan to stay with a friend or relative, located outside of the evacuation zone
– Follow further instructions from local officials and tune into a local radio station
– Keep all receipts for evacuation-related expenses included home flood proofing, hotel bills and meals
