With black ice, snowdrifts, freezing rain and white-out conditions, winter driving can be very unnerving and dangerous. This past weekend brought with it freezing rain, wind and snow in some sections of the province. In 2019, MPI reported a total of 54,755 traffic collisions. Last year traffic collisions increased by 6% when compared to the 2018 numbers and increased 19% when compared to 2014-2018 annual averages. When it was broken down into factors causing the collisions, the results showed these numbers;
Distracted driving – 25% of all collisions Following too closely – 8% of all collisions
Backing unsafely – nearly 6% of all collisions
Speed – 5% of all collisions
Turning improperly – 4% of all collisions Slippery road surface– 4% of all collisions Fail to yield right-of-way – 4% of all collisions
Changing lanes improperly – 4% of all collisions
Lost control/Drive off the road – 3% of all collisions
The actions of a wild animal – 2% of all collisions.
With these numbers being just for Manitoba, have you encountered anywhere worse for driving?
