Brandon continues to move ahead with plans for a multi-million dollar sports complex at First Street and Veterans Way.
Parks Manager Bryce Wilson says a call went out this week to companies to develop a detailed design.
“On Monday, the City of Brandon advertised a request for an expression of interest for the detailed design of the outdoor sports complex at First Street and Veterans Way,” says Wilson. “Then early summer, hopefully, we’ll send out an RFP for the detailed designs from the firms that have been short-listed, and from there we’ll receive the detailed design from the successful contractor, and hopefully that’ll get us ready for construction in 2022.”

Wilson says “the proposed concept right now is a FIFA-sized soccer field, and then numerous other regular-sized turf soccer fields, cricket pitches, walking paths, a disc golf course, irrigation ponds, there will be a maintenance shop obviously, concession area, a washroom building and change rooms. It’s an extensive project with numerous different amenities.”
He says City Council has already “approved the debenture of $6-million dollars to proceed with the project, but we won’t have a final costing figure until the detailed design is completed by late 2021 or early 2022.” He adds a feasability study estimated the total cost of the project at around $10-million dollars.
Wilson says additional money will be needed through fundraising and sponsorship.
