The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating following an allegation of serious injuries arising from a police-involved incident on April 14, 2023, in Brandon.
On April 14, Brandon Police Service (BPS) notified the IIU of an incident that occurred that same day. According to the notification, BPS advised that officers attempted to stop a stolen vehicle in the 800 block of Van Horne Avenue at approximately 1:30 a.m.
Police followed the vehicle to Provincial Trunk Highway 10, where police disengaged. BPS officers later located the vehicle in the vicinity of 13th Street, where it stopped on the road to let a passenger out. A 35-year-old passenger was taken to Brandon Regional Health Centre, where she was treated for fractured ribs.
As fractured ribs are defined as serious injuries, the IIU is mandated to investigate.
