The Manitoba government is supporting the installation of new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in Holland, Cypress River, and Treherne Environment and Climate Minister Kevin Klein announced in a media release today.
“Green transportation projects play a key role in protecting our environment and water, which is a top priority for our government,” said Klein. “Transitioning to electric vehicles will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, support a low-carbon economy and advance Manitoba’s goal to become Canada’s cleanest, greenest, and most climate resilient province.”
Four new Level 3 chargers will be installed in the following communities:
Holland, Rural Municipality of Victoria – one charger;
Cypress River, Rural Municipality of Victoria – one charger; and
Treherne, Rural Municipality of Norfolk Treherne – two chargers.
“On behalf of the council of the Rural Municipality of Norfolk Treherne, we are pleased to have received funding through the Manitoba government and ongoing support from Eco-West Canada for the placement of EV charging stations within our communities,” said Reeve Gilles Guertin, RM of Norfolk Treherne. “Increasing access to level 3 chargers in a strategic central location along one of the busiest highways in southern Manitoba will help us advance the goals of the Made-In-Manitoba Climate and Green Plan.”
“As a fifth-generation Ford Dealership that has been proudly serving Treherne and area since 1900, Metcalfe’s has always embraced change and technological advancements,” said Neil Metcalfe, president, Metcalfe’s Garage Ltd. “As a rural auto dealership on a major highway in southern Manitoba, I felt it was important we support the EV movement and those travelling on Provincial Trunk Highway 2 with a reliable level 3 charging source to accommodate the distances that they need to travel.”
These projects are part of a $150,000 investment from the Manitoba government to support an initiative being led by Eco-West Canada, a Manitoba-based not-for-profit that focuses on green infrastructure. The projects help support the technology and infrastructure needed to expand the province’s EV charging network and support collaborative planning for regional green transportation initiatives.
“This is a significant step forward for EV travel in southwest Manitoba, as there are many communities that until recently did not have access to any charging infrastructure,” said Dany Robidoux, executive director, Eco-West Canada. “This goes a long way toward alleviating concerns regarding ‘range anxiety’ for current and eventual owners of EVs in the region. The level 3 chargers support owners of larger electric vehicles who are travelling through from other provinces, as well as those who wish to travel with ease to larger urban centres such as Brandon and Winnipeg.”
