The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating circumstances surrounding a death in custody following the arrest of a male that occurred on Aug. 20.
A media release states that on “Aug. 20, the IIU was notified by Brandon Police Service that a male had been arrested for multiple Criminal Code offences including flight from police, breach of a release order and drug-related offences. While in custody, the male displayed unusual behaviour resulting in Brandon Fire and Emergency Services being requested. The male’s condition deteriorated rapidly and he was transported to Brandon Regional Health Centre, where he was declared deceased a short time later.
The IIU has assumed responsibility for this investigation in accordance with Sec. 66(4) of the Police Services Act. As this matter involves a fatality, a request for a civilian monitor will be made to the Manitoba Police Commission.
Witnesses or other individuals who have information or video footage that may assist this investigation are asked to contact the IIU toll free at 1-844-667-6060.
