The Melita Golf Club has received the 2023 Valleyview Co-op Community Builders Fund award.
In a media release, Valleyview Co-op said “the Melita Golf Club applied for support after suffering a few significant setbacks.”
Melita Golf Club Treasurer/Secretary Ray Smithson said “We have had some major issues to end 2022. High water levels and major run-off during the year damaged one of our major bridges across the Graham Creek to the extent that engineers said it had to be replaced for public safety. This bridge is the main link connecting the Course’s East/West sides. The second issue is our aging irrigation system. Inground, electrical does not go well with high water levels and saturated soils.” Valleyview said “After completing their application for support, structural issues also caused the collapse of their #2 tee box.”
Valleyview Co-op GM Greg Gill said “We are proud to support our local communities, including worthwhile projects important to community members. The Melita Golf Course is a great business partner, and we want to ensure they are open and ready to serve their members and user groups. The Melita Golf Course provides opportunities for community members to gather and spend quality time together, enjoying a meal or a drink with friends after a round of golf. We hope to see the Melita Golf Club continue positively impacting community members and local businesses for many years to come.”
Valleyview Co-op created the Community Builders Fund to help support larger projects within their trading area. Projects must impact a range of community members, be a multi-year project, exist within Valleyview Co-op’s trading area and meet the Valleyview Co-op giving criteria.
The Melita Golf Course is a community-owned public golf course in the Town of Melita which has been operating since the mid-1930s.
