In a release sent out Tuesday (Sept 26), The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) said it’s investigating the circumstances surrounding the arrest of a male in Brandon on Sept. 24.
“On Sept. 25, the Brandon Police Service (BPS) notified the IIU of an incident that resulted in a serious injury that required medical attention. According to the notification, on Sept. 24 at 4:21 p.m., members of the BPS responded to a call for service regarding a man attempting arson. The man ran from the scene, resulting in a police car colliding with the man in front of police headquarters. The man was then taken to Brandon Regional Hospital, where it was determined he had a broken arm.
As a broken arm is defined as a serious injury under IIU regulation, the IIU is mandated to investigate.
Witnesses or other individuals who have information or video footage that may assist this investigation are asked to contact the IIU toll free at 1-844-667-6060.
The investigation is ongoing and no further details will be provided at this time.”

“On Sept. 25, the Brandon Police Service (BPS) notified the IIU of an incident that resulted in a serious injury that required medical attention. According to the notification, on Aug. 25 at 11:56 p.m., members of the BPS responded to a call for service in the area of 1st Street and Cornwallis Crescent regarding a woman causing a disturbance. Officers arrested anadult female and returned her to her home. On Aug. 31, the female attended BPS and provided a complaint of injuries sustained during the incident with police on Aug. 25. On Sept. 15, BPS learned that the female had sustained a broken collarbone.
As a broken collarbone is defined as a serious injury under the IIU regulations, the IIU is mandated to investigate.
