The election results are in and the Manitoba New Democrats won a majority government ending two consecutive terms of majority rule by the Progressive Conservatives. NDP Leader Wab Kinew has also become Canada’s first First Nations premier.
In Brandon, the NDP’s Glen Simard is the new MLA for Brandon East unseating Conservative Len Isleifson – while Brandon West has not been decided yet. Late Tuesday night, the Conservatives Wayne Balcaen was leading the NDP’s Quentin Robinson by just 98 votes. All of the advance votes had not yet been counted.
And in Spruce Woods – Conservative newcomer Grant Jackson was elected.
The New Democrat victory also resulted in the other two main party leaders stepping down.
Conservative leader Heather Stefanson, whose Winnipeg Tuxedo riding remains undecided, is resigning – and so is Liberal leader Dougald Lamont who lost his St. Boniface seat.
The Liberal party’s seat count also dropped from three to one.
