-The Brandon Wheat Kings host the Edmonton Oil Kings tonight, and the Medicine Hat Tigers tomorrow. Brandon is coming off a 4-2 loss to the Pats last weekend. The Wheat Kings currently sit in 8th place in the WHL Eastern Conference at 8-8-4-and-1, good for 21 points. The Oil Kings are last in the division with 13 points – while the Tigers are on top of the East with 28 points.
The Brandon AAA U-18 Wheat Kings return to action this weekend with three games. They’ll host the Winnipeg Wild tonight at J&G Homes Arena. On Saturday, they’ll visit the Eastman Selects, and on Sunday they’ll play the Interlake Lightning. Brandon is currently in first in the league at 13-0-1-0.
-There was one game in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League last night – the Virden Oil Capitals beat the Waywayseecappo Wolverines 4-3 in a shootout. There are 4 games tonight – the Portage Terriers are in Dauphin against the Kings, Selkirk visits Neepawa, Steinbach is at Swan Valley – and the Winnipeg Blues meet the Flyers in Winkler.
-In the NHL – the Winnipeg Jets, who beat the Devils 6-3 on Tuesday, host the Buffalo Sabres tonight and the Arizona Coyotes Saturday night. Next Wednesday, the Jets begin a three-game eastern road trip against the Tampa bay Lightning.
-The Brandon University Bobcats men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams are in action this weekend. The basketball teams host the University of Calgary Dinos tonight and Saturday at the Healthy Living Centre – and the volleyball teams are in Edmonton against the MacEwan University Griffins.
-The Toronto Argonauts were the big winners at the annual CFL Awards on Thursday. The Argos took five of the seven major awards, while the Winnipeg Blue Bombers went just one-for-four. Bombers running back Brady Oliveira won the Most Outstanding Canadian Award – but lost out to Argos quarterback Chad Kelly who was named Most Outstanding Player. The Blue Bombers meet the Montreal Alouettes in Sunday’s Grey Cup game in Hamilton. Kick-off is at 5:00 pm Manitoba time.
-The Cincinnati Bengals suffered a costly loss. They dropped a 34-20 decision to Baltimore, and lost quarterback Joe Burrow with a sprained right wrist. He was forced to leave the game in the second quarter. The Ravens lead the AFC North Division at 8-and-3.
-There were two unanimous picks for baseball’s MVP awards. Two-way star Shohei Ohtani of the L-A Angels received all 30 first-place votes for the American League honour. Atlanta’s Ronald Acuna Junior swept the first-place votes for the National League award. He became the first big leaguer with 40 homers and 70 stolen bases in a season.
-and Major League Baseball owners have cleared the way for the Oakland Athletics’ move to Las Vegas. The A’s plan to move to a stadium that’ll be built on the Vegas strip. The team will remain at the Oakland Coliseum next season for the last year of their lease. Plans are to open the new ballpark in 2028.
