-There are 14 NHL games tonight including the Winnipeg Jets at home to the Edmonton Oilers. The Jets are 9th in the league standings with 26 points, the second most of any Canadian team, but have lost two straight. The Oilers are 28th in the league, but have three straight wins. There were just three NHL games last night – the Montreal Canadiens doubled the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-2, the Rangers beat the Red Wings 3-2 – and the Capitals edged the Kings 2-1.
-The Brandon Wheat Kings return to action tomorrow (Dec 1) when they host the Regina Pats. It’s the start of 8 straight home games for Brandon. The Wheat Kings are currently 7th in the Eastern Conference with 27 points on a record of 11-11-4-and-1. The Saskatoon Blades top the east with 37 points followed by the Tigers, Warriors, Hurricanes, Raiders and Broncos. The Red Deer Rebels are two points behind the Wheat Kings followed to the bottom by the Hitmen, Pats and Oil Kings.
-The Brandon AAA U18 Wheat Kings downed the visiting Yellowhead Chiefs 6-2 last night. The Wheat Kings improved to 17-0-and-1, and sit in first place in the league, 5 points ahead of the second place Southwest Cougars.
-In the Manitoba Junior Hockey League – the Neepawa Titans edged the Virden Oil Capitals 3-2 in overtime – and Winkler shutout Niverville 2-0.
-Team Canada will feature three new players next month when it plays the U-S in the fifth instalment of the Rivalry Series. Hockey Canada has included forwards Jennifer Gardiner and Anne Cherkowski, along with Nicole Gosling on defence. The games take place on December 14th and 16th in Kitchener and Sarnia.
-The Provincial A, AA & AAA High School Varsity Volleyball Championships begin today. The Boissevain Broncos are at the AA boys championship in Ile des Chenes. The Deloraine girls and Wawanesa boys are at the A championship in Fisher River – and the Neelin boys and girls are at the Provincial AAA championships in Dauphin.
-A decorated curler for Scotland will represent Canada at the 2024 world mixed curling championship in Aberdeen, Scotland. Kelly Schafer’s team won the Canadian mixed title earlier this month in Swift Current. In 2010, Schafer, who was then Kelly Wood, won silver with Scotland at the world women’s championship in Swift Current, where she met Jerrod Schafer who was the mayor at the time. She became Kelly Schafer in 2013.
-The BC Lions will host the Ottawa Redblacks in a regular-season CFL game in Victoria next season. The “Touchdown Pacific” game will be played Saturday, August 31st at Royal Athletic Park. It’ll be the sixth instalment of the CFL’s “Touchdown Series” of neutral-site games, but the first in Victoria. The other five were held in the Atlantic provinces.
-The Dallas Cowboys welcome the Seattle Seahawks tonight to kick-off Week 13 of the NFL season. The 8-and-3 Cowboys have won three straight and sit in second place in the NFC East. The Seahawks are 6-and-5 – and second in the NFC West.
-and the Toronto Raptors beat Phoenix 112-105 snapping the Sun’s 7-game winning streak.
