-The Edmonton Oil Kings rallied to beat the Brandon Wheat Kings 5-4 in overtime on Sunday. The Wheat Kings dropped their other two weekend road games, as well – 8-0 to Calgary on Friday – and 5-3 to Red Deer on Saturday. Brandon’s next game is this Friday (Feb 2) at home against the Red Deer Rebels before travelling to Swift Current on Saturday (Feb 3) and Saskatoon on Sunday (Feb 4).
-The Brandon AAA U18 Wheat Kings made it 22 wins in a row on Sunday by beating the Kenora Thistles 12-1. Brandon improved to 34-0-and-1 to remain in top spot in the league – and will host the second-place Southwest Cougars this Friday.
-The Winnipeg Jets lost 4-2 to the Maple Leafs on Saturday. It’s the first time the Jets have lost three straight games since late November. Winnipeg is back in action after the All-Star break on February 6th when they visit the Pittsbrugh Penguins.
-Abby Boreen scored in overtime to lift Minnesota past New York 2-1 in the lone Professional Women’s Hockey League game on Sunday.
-The Kansas City Chiefs will meet the San Francisco 49’ers in Super Bowl 58 on February 11th. The Chiefs beat Baltimore 17-10 to capture the AFC Championship on Sunday – and the Niners edged the Detroit Lions 34-31 for the NFC title.
-and Kaitlyn Lawes rink, from the Fort Rouge Curling Club in Winnipeg, captured the Manitoba women’s curling championship. They beat Beth Peterson 9-8 on Sunday in Morden. Jennifer Jones and four-time defending Canadian champion Kerri Einarson of Gimli have already secured their spots for the national championship which runs February 16th to 25th in Calgary.
