There were a total of 197 student suspensions in Brandon schools in the first semester this year – a rise of 17 suspensions, or a 9.4% increase from the same period last year.
The Brandon Sun reports today, Brandon School Division Superintendent Mathew Gustafson said the suspensions involved 150 students from kindergarten to Grade 12. He revealed the numbers to the board of trustees on Monday (Feb 26).
In Kindergarten to Grade 8 suspensions were down, but were up in high schools mainly due to ‘assaultive behaviour’. The report also said “some students had received multiple suspensions – one student got two – while 10 others were given three or more.”
The Sun also reports that “regarding preventative measures, Gustafson highlighted a multifaceted approach that includes wrap-around services, behaviour plans and communication with parents.”
He said “there hasn’t been an expulsion from the school division for a long time.”
