It seems the spring pothole problem is one of the worst ever – not only are Brandon streets in rough shape, but so are many roads province wide.
Manitoba Public Insurance says that last month they received 406 pothole-related claims compared with the 86 claims in February last year.
MPI told the CBC that by March 10th, they had received 98 pothole-related claims – “almost half of the 204 pothole-related claims made in the same month last year. In March 2022, 622 pothole claims were reported, according to MPI.”
Here are some of the worst pothole areas Brandon residents have pointed out:
-There’s a big pothole right on the corner of right lane on Rosser as you turn off 18th. It’s masked with water too. Hope nobody else is a victim of that one! (Jess)
-18th from Patricia through to the #1 is a giant pothole. It’s probably smoother and safer driving directly through the uncultivated fields. (Deyton)
-There’s a three bedroom two bathroom pot hole on 18th and Victoria. (Jungle Boy)
-Richmond from approx. 6th Street up to 18th Street is abysmal. 18th Street between Victoria to Aberdeen is like a war zone. (Elise)
MPI says the freeze-thaw cycle, which wrecks the pavement, has been almost continuous this year and crews patching roads can’t catch up.
The report also said 22,600 potholes were filled in Winnipeg in February, when around 3,000 is considered ‘normal.’
