-The Edmonton Oilers forced a Game 6 in the Stanley Cup final by beating the Florida Panthers 5-3 last night. Florida’s lead is now 3-games-to-2 as the Best-of-7 series heads back to Edmonton on Friday.
-Canadian forward Natalie Spooner has been named the International Ice Hockey Federation’s Female Player of the Year for 2024. Spooner had a league-leading 20 goals and 27 points for Toronto in the inaugural Professional Women’s Hockey League season. She was also named the league’s MVP and top forward. Spooner also had a goal and four points to help Canada win gold at the women’s world hockey championship.
-There were two games in the Euro 2024 tournament – Turkey beat Georgia 3-1 – and Portugal downed Czechia 2-1.
-In the South West Baseball League tonight – the first place Boissevain Centennials visit the second place Reston Rockets. The defending champion Centennials are 8-and-1, while the Rockets are 6-and-1. Boissevain has won six straight games – Reston is riding a five-game winning streak.
-The Blue Jays dropped their second straight to the Red Sox 4-3
-and Willie Mays, one of baseball’s greatest and most beloved players, has died. He was 93. He played most of his 23 major league seasons with the New York/San Francisco Giants.
