The Manitoba government is providing more than $265,000 to support programs and services aimed at preventing crime and promoting safer communities in northern Manitoba, Justice Minister Matt Wiebe announced in a media release today (June 24).
“Every Manitoban deserves to feel safe in their communities,” said Wiebe. “This funding will support important initiatives in northern Manitoba that advance reconciliation, build community connections, enhance safety and provide opportunities for youth. It is part of our government’s commitment to tackling crime and the causes of crime in every region of this province.”
The support will assist rural law enforcement agencies in purchasing important safety equipment and advancing several community initiatives including:
- equipment for the Junior Canadian Ranger program in Gillam and Fox Lake;
- summer sport and safety equipment in Nelson House;
- land-based learning events for youth in The Pas;
- Treaty Day events in Norway House; and
- transportation of equipment and supplies for the Wild North Dog Rescue.
Additionally, $150,000 from the fund will help purchase vehicles to enhance the operations of First Nations Safety Officers in five First Nations.
“The engagement of community members, especially youth, in positive, community-focused activities is such an important piece when it comes to crime prevention and safer communities,” said Supt. Paul Peddle, Manitoba north district commander, RCMP. “Providing enhancements to the First Nations Safety Officer program is essential, and having the funds allocated to do both the enhancements and the activities will promote the safety and well-being of all who live in the supported communities. This fund does important work that complements the efforts being made by the RCMP in those areas.”
The funding will be provided through the Criminal Property Forfeiture Fund, a program that uses the proceeds of the sale of seized criminal property to protect Manitoba families and enhance public safety. The funds are provided to organizations across Manitoba whose important initiatives build community, prevent crime, invest in youth and support victims of crime.
