No charges will be laid in connection with the deadly highway crash near Carberry last June. A mini-bus carrying 24 seniors, on its way to Sandhills Casino, was hit by a semi-trailer – 17 people were killed.
Both Manitoba RCMP and the Crown say there were blind spots within the bus that obscured the driver’s view of the semi-trailer, and a review of the bus driver’s cellphone also confirmed there were no calls or texts going out or coming in at the time of the collision. They say the semi-trailer truck dashcam did show the bus “proceeded when it was unsafe.”
RCMP say they do not expect to be able to talk to the bus driver, who was severely injured in the crash, and the Crown says it does not serve the public interest to pursue charges.
Police say the complex investigation included talking to survivors, analyzing vehicles and securing forensic reports.
