-Canada meets Argentina tonight in the semi-finals of Copa America 2024. Argentina beat Canada 2-0 in the June 20th tournament opener. Uruguay and Colombia play Wednesday in the other semifinal. The championship game is scheduled for Sunday.
-Winnipegger Christina Litz, whose resume includes executive stints with the CFL, Woodbine Entertainment and Manitoba’s True North Sports and Entertainment, has been named president of the Northern Super League. The new professional women’s soccer league is slated to kick-off next April with franchises in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Halifax.
-In the South West Baseball League tonight – the Deloraine Royals host the Reston Rockets, and the Virden Oilers visit the Rivers Comets. The second place Comets and third place Royals have clinched playoff spots. The defending champion Boissevain Centennials will finish in first place. The Wawanesa Brewers hold down the fourth and final playoff spot, while Reston and the Oak River Dodgers are still in playoff contention.
-The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed American receiver Lucky Whitehead. He broke into the league with the Bombers in 2019, and has spent the last three seasons with the BC Lions. Whitehead has recorded 248 receptions for 3,192 yards, 15 rushes for 118 yards, and 13 touchdowns in 58 games. The 1-and-4 Blue Bombers will host the Calgary Stampeders on Friday.
-Two more Manitobans are headed to Paris after being chosen for Canada’s Olympic men’s volleyball team – Steinbach’s Eric Loeppky and Winnipeg’s Luke Herr. Six Manitobans will now wear the maple leaf when the games begin July 26th.
-and the Manitoba Derby has been removed from the Western Canadian Derby Series this year. A 45 day quarantine was imposed after the discovery of an illness affecting a horse at Assiniboia Downs.
