The leadership race for the vacant spot at the top of the provincial Progressive Conservative Party in Manitoba has its first entrant. Former provincial cabinet minister and former Winnipeg Blue Bomber Obby Khan has officially put forth his name.
Khan, who said he’s had people asking him to run, is the first candidate to replace Heather Stefanson. Stefanson stepped down in the fall of 2023 after the Conservatives lost the provincial election to the NDP.
After being named to the legislature in 2022, Khan served as minister of sport, culture and heritage. He is currently the MLA for Fort White, occupying one of 21 seats held in the legislature by the Conservatives to the NDP’s 35.
The leadership race will be officially decided in April of 2025. Prospective leaders have until October 15 to submit their names for nomination.
