Day two of Brandon Wheat Kings training camp was the busiest of the bunch, with four games during the day and a goalie session sandwiched in between. It was also the last chance for players to make an impression before Sunday’s prospects game, and it showed in the intensity level.
Saturday’s action started off with another overtime game, as befitted a camp with so many close contests. This time, Team Schenn got the last laugh over Team Propp as Luke Shipley scored the OT winner to give them their second straight victory. Team Propp got two goals from 2009-born forward Carson Park, who would go on to make his mark on the stat sheet again later in the day.
The first game that could properly be called a blowout didn’t start that way, as things were even for a time between Team Kidd and Team Provorov. Even when Team Kidd pulled away with goals by Knox Bendera, TJ Terpsma, Rylen Roersma, and Brady Turko, Provorov fought back with goals by Marcus Nguyen and Nicholas Johnson. But two more goals snuffed out any comeback bid and Kidd won 6-2.
Team Propp’s young guns stole the show against Team Provorov in the evening game. Prabh Bhathal, Maddox Gandha, and Easton Odut both scored twice, and Park picked up four assists in a convincing 7-2 win. Johnson and Quinn Mantei did the damage for Provorov.
Team Schenn completed the weekend series a perfect 3-0 thanks to stingy goaltending from Carson Bjarnason and two goals from Joby Baumuller in a 4-1 finishing win over Kidd. Caleb Hadland and Hudson Postnikoff also scored, while Ben Binder Nord picked up two assists. Kade Kahovec had the lone tally for Kidd.
It’s all on the young guns tomorrow. After a veteran’s skate early in the morning, the prospects will face off at 11:00 at Westoba Place. That game is open to the public and admission is free.
