After this latest dump of snow, Brandon snow clearing crews will shift their focus to the main streets and bus routes again before heading back to the residential streets. Acting city manager Terry Parlow told The Brandon Sun that with all the snow so far this winter – the city’s close to going over budget on snow clearing.

Local Indigenous-led groups that have projects to prevent and reduce homelessness can now apply for funding. The Brandon Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation says just over $680,000 is available through the federal ‘Reaching Home’ program to cover capital or operational costs.

Manitoba RCMP is warning parents about a violent online network that targets children and youth. The group, called ‘The COM’, manipulates young people through online platforms and games, Police say it threatens,
coerces and extorts youth into serious acts of violence, including hurting themselves, other people or animals.

Canada Post says children’s letters will be delivered to the North Pole by Christmas Eve, however Santa won’t have time to respond this year. They say all letters mailed by December 23rd will be delivered straight to the North Pole. Each year the program helps deliver 1.5-million letters to Santa.

A Brandon couple won a million dollars in the Lotto Max draw on November 22nd. Carol and Blair Sangster bought their winning ticket at Gambler Gas & Convenience Store. They plan to buy a house, share some of the windfall with family, and spoil their grandchildren at Christmas.

The GST holiday is a ‘giant mess’ according to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business. They say a lot of retailers are not sure whether it’s mandatory to take the GST off certain products – and the Canada Revenue Agency apparently says they’re not planning to rigidly enforce it. The tax break is in place until the middle of February.

and Chicago writer Kevin Lynch, and his puppy ‘Umlaut’, recently took a road trip to visit all 21 counties in Sweden with towns named after IKEA products. Lynch was inspired by a Swedish tourism board campaign called – ‘Discover the Originals’ – matching town names with IKEA products. For example he visited ‘Kallax’ – a village near Swedish Lapland – which IKEA named one of its storage units.
