Norad is tracking Santa’s trip around the world today. North American Aerospace Defence Command, which began tracking Santa in 1955, uses satellites, radar, and CF-18 aircraft to follow his journey.
DYK; NORAD’S Santa tracker began with a Misdial 7-decades ago. In 1955, a misprinted Sears holiday Ad, led to a child accidentally dialing a top-secret Pentagon hotline; connecting Colonel Harry Shoup, who embraced the mistake and directed his team to answer calls from children asking for Santa!
This unexpected event inspired the creation of the annual Santa Tracker, with NORAD providing updates on Santa’s location through radio, TV, and eventually digital platforms.
Today, the Santa Tracker is a cherished global tradition featuring a hotline, multilingual website, app, and smart speaker integration, supported by over 1, 250 volunteers.
