Manitoba Ag Days is underway at Brandon’s Keystone Centre. The event features over 550 exhibitors showcasing the latest in agricultural equipment and technology, and also boasts a variety of speakers on a range of topics of interest to producers. Ag Days runs until Thursday.

Inflation slowed further in December to 1.8% from 1.9% in November mostly due to a break on the GST from Ottawa. Restaurant food, alcohol, children’s clothes, toys and other hobby items saw sizeable annual declines – while gas prices and travel services increased.

511 collision claims came into Manitoba Public Insurance because of last Friday’s stormy weather, and more are expected in the coming weeks. The blizzard forced numerous highway closures and contributed to a host of crashes. 268 claims were from Winnipeg – 12 from Brandon.

If you live near the Manitoba-US border – you could start seeing and hearing Black Hawk helicopters on a regular basis. RCMP say the helicopters will target all illegal activity along the border, including illegal entry into Canada and drug trafficking. The move was made in response to US President Donald Trump’s promise to impose 25% tariffs unless border security was tightened; tariffs which could still come down February 1st.

There’s a warning from the Public Service Alliance of Canada that 3,300 positions will be eliminated at Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. The union says it’s not clear yet who’ll be affected. The 2024 federal budget called for 5,000 public service jobs cuts through attrition over 4 years.

More than a third of Canadians say they have no choice but to seek health information online because they don’t have access to a doctor. A new poll also found 23% said following online health advice resulted in a bad reaction, or had a negative impact on their health. Canada is currently experiencing a severe doctor shortage.

When a Japanese aquarium was closed for renovations last month – staff noticed their sunfish was ailing. It had stopped eating and staff couldn’t figure out the cause until one of them suggested it may be missing visitors –
it might be lonely. So they attached uniforms of the staff members to the tank, and the next day – the sunfish was doing good. They say it’s a curious fish, and would swim up to the front of its tank whenever people came to visit.
