A march and rally were held in Brandon on Saturday in support of Ukraine and its on-going conflict with Russia – today (Feb 24) marks the third year since the invasion. About 250 people took part in the event, which began at BU and ended at City Hall.

Canada will send $5 billion in aid to Ukraine using funds from seized Russian assets, this from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau who’s at peace and security summit in Kyiv. Trudeau also pledged 25 additional light armoured vehicles and a grant to help with energy security.

Brandon has a representative on Manitoba’s U-S Trade Council. Chamber of Chamber of Commerce vice-president Jennifer Ludwig has been appointed to the council which will support the province’s response to U.S. tariffs.
The council will also focus on the move to dismantle Inter-provincial trade barriers.

Brandon city councillors are calling on the provincial and federal governments to do more to punish repeat offenders. They’ve joined a growing call for bail reform saying an increasing crime rate in the city is jeopardizing public safety. A letter to both governments states federal policies do not appropriately hold offenders accountable.

The first of two live Liberal leadership debates will be held tonight. There’s just two weeks left until the winner is announced, and two days until voting begins. Mark Carney, Chrystia Freeland, Karina Gould and Frank Baylis
will take part in the French-language debate – the English debate is tomorrow.

Police are warning about a new batch of fentanyl that’s pressed and packaged to look like cut-out cookies, soaps, candies and confections. Winnipeg police have seen these on the streets, and if you come across some – do not touch them and call police.

Off-road vehicles, including ATV’s and side-by-sides, are popular in Westman, but there’s a warning from the the Canadian Paediatric Society they’re not too safe for kids. Children and teens make up a third of off-road vehicle deaths – and the Society wants to see better regulations and safety measures. In Manitoba, helmets are mandatory.

Some children’s sunscreens are being recalled in Canada because of the presence of a solvent that could pose health risks. The recall affects SC Johnson & Sons ‘Kids by Babyganics SPF 50 Totally Tropical’ mineral sunscreens. The solvent can be absorbed through the skin and by inhalation, and can harm fetal development and the reproductive system.

As egg prices surge in the U.S. – there’s apparently been a rise in egg smuggling. Avian flu affecting poultry farms has caused prices to soar – and some American retailers are charging as much as $10.00 a dozen. Most of the smuggling have been happening at the U-S-Mexico border.
