-It appears U-S President Donald Trump’s 25% tariff on most imports from Canada will go forward next week. He said Canada has ripped off the U-S for too long, and it’s time to put a stop to it. Economists have said tariffs that high have the potential to plunge the Canadian economy into a recession – and lead to severe economic disruption for industries across the country.
-Some Google Maps users in Canada are claiming provincial parks have been labelled as ‘state’ parks. Users have posted screen shots showing several parks in BC have been relabelled – and the tech giant also removed provincial parks as a category on the app altogether. This comes amid recent threats from Donald Trump to make Canada America’s 51st state.
-Contributions to Registered Retirement Savings Plans are expected to drop in Manitoba this year due to financial uncertainty. A new poll found 39% of Manitobans plan to contribute to their RRSP – which is down from previous years. One in 10 also say they can’t afford to invest in RRSP’s at all.
-Your new plastic health card, to replace the old paper one, should begin arriving in your mailbox in the coming days. More than 200,000 Manitobans applied to get the new card that features a northern lights design. A digital health card will also be available later this year.
-Brandon police have charged two men, aged 31 and 27, with several charges after a high-speed chase early Sunday morning down 1st Street. A ‘stop stick’ had to be deployed to stop the vehicle which had reached speeds up to 100 km/h. Police say a shotgun stolen from Saskatchewan was also recovered.
-A brand of infant car seats is being recalled in Canada. Aton G Swivel car seats made by Cybex, including those with the SensorSafe function, have a defect that can cause the harness to detach. So far, Health Canada has not received any reports of injuries.
-Canadian Mike Jack now has another Guinness World Record. He slurped down nearly 1.5 kilograms of hot sauce in just 3 minutes at the Heatwave Hot Sauce Expo in Nova Scotia on Saturday. The previous record was 1.18 kilos. Jack, who makes a living selling his own brand of hot sauce, also has records for ‘Fastest time eating a head of lettuce’ – ‘Fastest time eating a banana with no hands’ – ‘Most almonds eaten in a minute’ – and records for eating Carolina Reapers and Ghost Peppers.
