Winnipeg Jets fans are not only get to see one of the most famous spectacles in hockey this postseason, they’re going to be the source of it.
In a release this afternoon, the provincial government announced Winnipeg Jets Whiteout Street Party will return to downtown Winnipeg. The province has pledged funding to help fans celebrate.
“Our government is excited to help bring the Jets whiteout parties to downtown Winnipeg for what we hope is a lengthy playoff run,” said Premier Wab Kinew. “Not only do whiteout parties benefit downtown businesses and raise money for housing and mental health supports – they’re a fantastic way to come together as a community. Whiteout parties are a great, affordable way to experience the atmosphere of playoff hockey.”
According to their release, the provincial government will provide up to $300,000 for the parties, which could go deep into the spring depending on the length of the Jets’ playoff run and the number of home games they get. Street parties will take place downtown before and after Jets’ home playoff games.
“Winnipeg has the best fans in the NHL and we can’t wait to see downtown buzzing with energy,” said Sport, Culture, Heritage and Tourism Minister Nellie Kennedy. “By partnering with True North Sports + Entertainment, we’re helping to create safe events downtown that allow neighbours to connect, support local business and create lasting memories as we support our Winnipeg Jets.”
The release concluded that the Whiteout Parties will be on Donald Street between Portage Avenue and Graham Avenue (Honorary Dale Hawerchuk Way), outside Canada Life Centre. Tickets are priced at $10, with 50 per cent of proceeds going to the United Way to support initiatives tackling chronic homelessness and expanding mental health and addictions resources.
While the opening round schedule for the Jets is not yet locked in (nor is their opponent) the playoffs will begin on Saturday, April 19.
