The early roster for the newest WHL team has taken shape, and the Wheat Kings are unfortunately down one of their promising young forwards as a result.
Isaac Davies, a 2008-born forward who made his WHL regular season and playoff debuts with the Wheat Kings during the 2024-25 season was claimed by the Penticton Vees in today’s expansion draft. Davies was the lone choice from the Wheat Kings.
A former fourth-round pick by the Wheat Kings in 2023, 72nd overall, Davies spent most of the previous two seasons with the Airdrie CFR Bisons in the Alberta U18 AAA ranks. He also played seven regular season and two playoff games with the Black and Gold.
Under the rules of the expansion draft, the Wheat Kings could protect either 16 players born from 2005-2008 and six college players on their list, or 14 players born from 2006-2008 and three 2005-born players as well as those six college players. No 2009s needed to be protected.
The Vees roster, unveiled this afternoon, was bolstered not only by their picks but by several trades as well. These trades included the moving of Swift Current Broncos forward Brady Birnie and Calgary Hitmen forward Chase Valliant.
As they play in the B.C. division, the Vees will travel to Brandon this season at a date to be determined.
