A 54-year-old woman was taken to hospital in stable condition after a Carberry RCMP officer shot her following a disturbance on Highway 1 on the evening of May 12.
According to RCMP, at about 9:30 pm, Carberry RCMP responded to reports of an unknown person causing a disturbance on Highway 1, near Road 88 West. Witnesses had reported a woman wandering in and out of traffic.
When the first officer arrived at the scene, police allege the officer saw the woman acting erratically and climbing up onto vehicles on the highway, while in possession of an edged weapon.
βThe officer made numerous attempts to de-escalate the situation, however, the female ignored the officer and continued to behave erratically while brandishing the edged weapon,β reads the RCMP release.
Police said the officer told the woman repeatedly to drop the weapon, but she did not. She instead turned and advanced quickly toward the officer with the edged weapon. The officer shot her, wounding her. According to police, officers provided medical aid until EMS arrived. The woman, a 54-year-old from the RM North Cypress Langford, was transported to hospital in stable condition.
Police also pointed out the officer was wearing a Body Worn Camera, which was activated upon arrival at the scene. The video will be turned over to the Independent Investigation Unit, which has taken over the officer-involved shooting investigation.
Carberry RCMP, along with officers from Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services, continue to investigate.
